Science students from a North Somerset sixth form spent time using state-of-the-art equipment at a South West university.

Almost 30 A-level pupils from Churchill Academy visited the University of Bristol’s top-quality chemistry facilities to enhance their laboratory skills and learn from some of the country’s brightest minds.

The burgeoning scientists were tasked with completing an experiment where they extracted caffeine from cups of tea before getting their hands on infrared spectroscopy technology to analyse their findings.

The students then enjoyed a talk by PHD student Bethan Donnelly, where she shared her expertise in photochemical drug design, followed by an impressive demonstration by Professor Tim Harrison.

A Churchill spokesman said: “Thank you to the chemistry department at the University of Bristol for hosting us.”
