Cheddar runners advance to country championships

Runners from a Cheddar school have qualified for the Somerset Schools County Championships.

Kings Of Wessex Academy’s top five runners braved the elements at the Mendip Area Cross Country Championships on January 10.

Year nine pupil Grace Ashurst was first to race, running 3.2km and placing fifth in her category.

Max Helps and Ben Connelly were next to run in the largest field of runners on the day, completing a 3.8km course and placing seventh and 18th respectively.

Last to go were year ten students Ruth Day and Emily Murray who kept a fast pace throughout the 3.8km course before crossing the line in second and fourth.

PE subject leader Carl Bennett said: “All five students performed outstandingly and did themselves proud and on behalf of the PE department and everyone at Kings, we wish them every success in the next round.”
