STUDENTS at a Highbridge school have held a memorial for a fellow pupil who died earlier this year.

Joe Laoutaris, who was in year eight at King Alfred School, died in March following a two-year battle with cancer, during which he was regularly in and out of hospital.

On Friday students set off helium balloons in memory of the 12-year-old, who suffered with a rare form of cancer known as Ewing’s Sarcoma Tumour, after running the Race For Life around the school grounds. Staff and pupils then unveiled a feature as a permanent memorial to Joe, who had given assemblies to his classmates about his illness before he died.
