Kay Rowley’s son Edward is in reception at Milton Park Primary School, and missed two days at the beginning of the school year due to the work.

And she says the five-year-old’s education will be further disrupted by work at the end of the academic year, adding parents are ‘up in arms’ about the timing.

North Somerset Council says the work, which is part of a £2.4million project lasting 15 months, will provide ‘effectively a new school’ for pupils, and that disruption will be kept to a minimum.

Mrs Rowley, aged 37, said: “A lot of parents are up in arms that our children will have to lose almost two weeks of valuable education because of this work.

“We are concerned about finding childcare for our children or otherwise we will have to take time off – one of my friends could miss earning up to £300 if she has to take three days off.

“We don’t understand why our children should have to miss out on almost two weeks’ worth of education just for this work to take place.”

Work to refurbish the entire school began in July 2011, and has included new flooring and lighting, among other features.

Reception pupils were forced to miss two days at the beginning of the school year in Milton Park Road due to this work.

Phase two will see an entirely new set of furniture installed, with the school due to close three days early before summer for furniture to be packed away before work can be done over the summer.

A further three days will then be missed at the beginning of the 2012/13 academic year.

A spokesman for the council said it was unavoidable to miss days at the end of the current year, but added two of the days which would be taken off at the beginning of the next academic year would be taken as inset days.

He added the school would welcome parents’ thoughts on the work, and would also prepare work for youngsters missing lessons because of it.
