‘Successful’ Yatton bell ringing days

A BAND of North Somerset church bell ringers hosted an open weekend to give people an insight into the practice.
The bell ringers at St Mary’s Church, in Yatton, gave visitors the opportunity to try their hand at ringing the church’s bells and provided demonstrations and talks about the historic activity, which is formally known as campanology.
The aim of the weekend was to recruit some new members to the St Mary’s band.
Ringing master Bernard North said: “The weekend was very successful and we had quite a few visitors to the tower from the Yatton area.
“We put on several demonstrations with the help of some of my ringing colleagues from the North Somerset area and there was a lot of interest in the subject judging by the questions that were asked.
“We have had several expressions of interest in learning to ring and hopefully we will be able to train some new ringers.”
If you are interested in taking up bell ringing, practice nights are held at the church in Church Road every Tuesdays from 7.30-9pm.
