A school in Uphill has been presented with a prestigious travel award for encouraging cycling.

Westhaven School, in Ellesmere Road, was presented with a bronze plaque from the National STARS School Travel Awards.

Staff, pupils and parents have been fundraising for a number of years to build and maintain a fleet of bikes and a maintenance workshop.

Cycling has been incorporated into PE lessons and the school has also worked with North Somerset Council to enable pupils to gain Bikeability qualifications.

Headteacher Tracey Towler added: “This bronze award reflects how much work the school has done over a number of years to encourage cycling and we are very pleased to have been awarded this national accreditation.”

The school would like to thank the bike shops and manufacturers which have supported the project.
