Extended deadline for pylon comments

ANTI-PYLON protestors have extra time to give their thoughts on a plan to run pylons through the North Somerset countryside.

ANTI-PYLON protestors have extra time to give their thoughts on a plan to run pylons through the North Somerset countryside.

But National Grid, the private company behind the scheme, still says it cannot publish the cost for putting the 400,000-volt cables underground.

A spokesman for the company claimed it cannot know how much it would cost to run the wires underground between Bridgwater and Avonmouth.

The spokesman said: "We would only ever consider running the cables underground for part of the route and until we have decided which will be chosen, we won't be able to do any calculations."

Last week, the company released figures to Weston MP John Penrose that showed it would cost £1.9billion to put the cables under the Severn Estuary, approximately four times the cost of using pylons.

National Grid says running the cables underground would cost between 12 and 17 times as much as putting them overhead.

Mr Penrose said: "It looks as though putting the lines underground or under the sea will cost more than pylons, but we've got to match those costs against the value of our beautiful countryside."

The revised end of the consultation is midnight on January 22. To join in, visit www.nationalgrid.com/hinkleyconnection
