The family of Worle man Deakon Wilkins have paid tribute to their ‘kind and caring’ son ahead of his funeral on Tuesday.

"He was always happy and no-one would say a bad word about him because everybody that met him liked him."

Deakon, aged 24, went missing after a night out with friends at Motion nightclub in Bristol on January 14.

In the three weeks that followed his mum and dad – Marcella and Andy Wilkins – were joined by friends, family and strangers from around the world as they desperately searched for their son.

Police appeals and social media pleas were shared far and wide but sadly, on February 5, Andy and Marcella got the news every parent dreads when their son’s body was found in Bristol’s Floating Harbour.

Avon and Somerset Constabulary is not treating Deakon’s death as suspicious and Andy told the Mercury him and his wife were able to ‘say goodbye’ to their ‘happy-go-lucky’ boy when they visited Avon Coroner’s Office last week, which has now opened an inquest into his death.

Andy was also joined by
Deakon’s friends, staff from
Motion and total strangers who had helped in the search for his son on Thursday when the group put rose petals in the canal and lay flowers outside of the nightclub in memory of Deakon.

Deakon lived in Worle all his
life and attended Worle Community School. In the past few years he had moved in with his grandfather, Brian, to keep him company.

Andy told the Mercury: “He was a caring lad, he would do anything for anybody – Deakon moving in with his granddad just shows that, no-one asked him to do that, he just said he would do it of his own accord. He was just a caring lad.

“He was always up and about with his mates and he was full of life. He was always happy and no-one would say a bad word about him because everybody that met him liked him – from people our age to his own friends, as soon as people met him and started chatting to him they liked him.”

Deakon’s funeral will take place on Tuesday at 3.45pm at Weston-super-Mare Crematorium, in Ebdon Road. Deakon wanted people to wear something colourful, but that is optional. His family have also said flowers are optional as they will be supporting two charities, Crisis and Missing People. Donations can be made through Howard Goodman Funeral Directors in The Boulevard or on 01934 635022.
