A nurse and a consultant are preparing to tackle the ultimate running challenge to raise money for Weston Hospicecare.

Fiona Chiplen, who works as a consultant at the hospice, and Sue Caddy, a community nurse, have signed up for the London Marathon and are knuckling down to extra training sessions ahead of the big race on April 22.

Sue supports patients who are living at home during their illness. She liaises with GPs, social care providers and the rest of the community nursing team to ensure patients have all their needs met.

Sue has been keen to take on the challenge for a while and the hospice provided the perfect incentive for her to sign up.

She said: “Running a marathon has always been on my to do list.

“Being able to run for Weston Hospicecare has made me stop procrastinating, and has given me the opportunity to raise some money for this amazing organisation.”

Fiona is fulfilling a life-long ambition by racing in the marathon. As a consultant in palliative medicine at the Uphill-based hospice, Fiona is responsible for ensuring the in-patient unit supports the individual needs of each patient.

She also visits patients in the community and liaises regularly with GP surgeries, the hospital and the hospice’s community nurses.

She said: “I love running and am delighted to be running the marathon for the hospice.

“It’s always been an ambition of mine and having the chance to run for such a good cause makes it even more of an exciting challenge.

“When I’m running on the day, the thought of all the people who have sponsored me will keep me going, as well as the thought of seeing my smiling children at the end.”

The charity supports people with life-limiting illnesses and their families. Event fundraiser Kelsey Dehaney, said: “The London Marathon is one of the most exciting and challenging events in the sports calendar.

“Every year, thousands take part – many to raise funds for a charity close to their hearts. As well as Sue and Fiona, five other runners are raising money for Weston Hospicecare, and we are extremely grateful to all of them for their time and dedication.”
