THE first organised walk of Milton Road Cemetery’s Chapel in Weston will take place tomorrow (Saturday).

The chapel was repaired with help from the Heritage Lottery Fund and re-opened in November 2010.

The Chapel will open at 1.30pm for visitors and an audio tour will be made available with the talk beginning at 2.30pm.

Pat Hase of the Family History Society will illustrate the development of the historic Weston Cemetery and set the scene for the Victorian attitude towards death.

She said: “From the middle of the 19th century we begin to see the use of Town Cemeteries instead of local churchyards for burials. Why did this happen and how were they used? Headlines in the Weston Gazette for January 1855 asked ‘What shall we do with our dead?’”

The event is open to everyone. For further information on the cemetery, the tour, exhibitions and talks, or for details on how to join the Friends of Milton Road Cemetery, please contact Zoe Clements on 01934 632575.
