WITH the World Cup warming up and a football frenzy taking over, one Weston sports club says it has something different to offer youngsters to get them fit this summer.

Trevor Byrne runs a traditional Japanese Shotokan Karate club for children aged eight and above and has applied to the Mercury and Weston Lions’ Go Kids Go! scheme in the hope of raising the profile of the group.

He said: “I think it’s crucial kids get the opportunity to see anything that is out of the norm, which in this country seems to be football and rugby.”

Trevor, who has practised karate for 34 years, said the club not only keeps youngsters fit, but teaches self-esteem and discipline.

He runs the twice-weekly sessions at Worle Community School’s gym and would like a grant to help let people know the club is there.

He said: “The main issue I have, because I am training at a school not a leisure centre, is there is no passing trade and people cannot see you.

“Ideally I need some funds for a couple of banners and flyers to put up around the school, so people who are driving past will think ‘let’s give that a go’.

“It’s giving children another option and it’s something different.”

Now in its third year, Go Kids Go! is giving away £12,000 to groups which promote healthy lifestyles and wellbeing in children.

Previous winners are welcome to re-apply, and first-time applicants can bid for a grant if they run a community group based within the postcode areas BS22, BS23, BS24 or BS25. Applications must come from a registered club, charity or not-for-profit organisation like schools or scout groups.

The grants could be used for schemes or items such as new training equipment, clubhouse improvements, playgroup equipment or kits and shirts.

Presentations will be held at the Weston Lions’ real ale festival on the Beach Lawns from July 25-27, which is now in its seventh year. For more information on the event visit www.westonlionsrealalefestival.org.uk

When you have completed the form, send it to Go Kids Go!, The Weston, Worle & Somerset Mercury, 32 Waterloo Street, Weston-super-Mare, BS23 1LW or hand it in at our office.

The deadline for applications is July 4 and the winners will be announced in the Mercury.
