Family man and bowls enthusiast Derrick Cooper features in this week’s Humans of Weston instalment.

Derrick, of Bleadon Hill, has two daughters and four grandchildren and will celebrate his 50th wedding anniversary this year.

One of Derrick’s favourite hobbies is playing bowls with his friends. He said: “In my spare time, my wife would say I am always at the bowls club.

“Bowls is a very nice social thing. You needn’t be very good – which I am not – but I tick along.

“Everybody there has got similar interests and the social side is far more important than actually playing the bowls.”

Derrick, aged 72, said his wife’s back problem made life restricted at times and urged people to park more considerately in Weston.

He said: “My wife sometimes has to use a wheelchair and it’s extremely difficult when people park on the pavement. I think it would help if people understood and were a little bit more considerate.”
