A Cheddar student has flown to Italy to represent Somerset at an international youth exchange, thanks to sponsorship from a village charity.

Cheddar Vale Lions Club sponsored Amy-Leigh Shepheard’s trip, during which she will spend 10 days with a host family before joining students from around the world at the International Youth Camp.

A Lions spokesman said: “The camp’s aim is to provide an experience of a lifetime for the students.

“Long-term friendships are made, different cultures are explored, ideas exchanged and they all learn to work together.”

The camps are organised by supporters of the Lions movement in several countries each year, so hundreds of young people can enjoy this experience every year.

The British camp will take place in August, and Cheddar Vale will be hosting students from Canada and Switzerland.

Activities planned for their visit include trips to Bath, Wells, the Fleet Air Arm Museum and Thatchers Cider.
