A BANWELL man is facing a prison sentence after he was found growing cannabis.

Carl Newberry, aged 36, of Summer Lane, appeared before North Somerset Courthouse in St Georges on Tuesday and pleaded guilty to producing 880g of cannabis.

Kevin Blackmore, prosecuting, told the court: “Officers were informed of a strong smell coming from the garden of a house in Weston.

“They found the shed locked but were informed by a female that the shed was used by the defendant.”

Mr Blackmore added that the defendant was then arrested and a search of the shed was carried out, in which officers found 22 cannabis plants – with an estimated street value of more than £5,500.

The court heard how the shed had been kitted out with suspended lighting, fans, timer switches and a ventilation system.

Chairman of the bench, Walter Lewis, told Mr Newberry due to the amount of plants involved and the likely street value he could face a prison sentence of 12 months or more.

He added that the court did not have enough power to deal with the offence and Newberry’s case was committed to Bristol Crown Court for sentencing on April 30.
