Students were asked to think outside the box at the Rotary Club of Mendip’s Young Writer competition.

Pupils were challenged to write essays on this year’s subject, called A Different Perspective.

A panel of judges chose the winners across three age groups and presented them with gift vouchers.

The winners from the junior and intermediate sections are all students at Hugh Sexey Academy in Blackford.

Shakil, aged 16 from Cheddar’s Kings Of Wessex Academy, took home the prize in the senior section.

Since the competition, two of the club’s winning entries were submitted to the Rotary’s district competition where Shakil was also victorious and will now move forward to the national competition.

Organiser Howard Darkin said, “We have a wealth of young creative writing talent in the Cheddar valley, and all who entered are to be congratulated.

“We also congratulate and thank the heads of English of the schools which took part.”
