There is still time to nominate your Community Champions of Weston-super-Mare in the latest round of awards.

The Mercury has received a number of nominations for the second Community Champions awards but with only a week to go we would like to hear about your unsung heroes.

Previous award winner Marianne Foord has nominated charitable duo Marion and Ray Hill for raising more than £21,000 for the Cystic Fibrosis Trust in support of their grandchildren.

The couple raised the money through garden sales and an annual ball.

Marianne said: “I think this idea is superb and I am happy to promote this couple for all their hard work and sincerity.”

Beverley and Sarah Milner Simonds were one of the first nominations the Mercury received after the pair ‘came to the rescue’ after the Weston super Food Festival was cancelled in June.

The couple pulled together a second Eat: Weston last month after the annual food festival had to be called off.

They then went on to nominate Alex Crowther from the Weston Eagles.

They praised Alex for his enthusiasm for the town and changing the perspective of the young people, describing him as a ‘wonderful asset’ to Weston and Worle.

Jon Williams from the Senior Citizen Liaison Team charity nominated Ashley James for a Community Champions of Weston award to show his ‘outstanding contribution’ to the safety of the older adult community.

Mr Williams said: “Ashley is a serving police office from Avon and Somerset police and somehow finds the time between this very demanding job, caring for his aged parents and supporting his family, to hold the volunteer role of chair of trustees at the charity.”

The Mercury and sponsor The Nightingale Group is asking anyone who knows a volunteer, charitable individual or someone who has gone above and beyond to send in their nominations.

To nominate someone send your name, telephone number and email address with the nominee’s details and your reasons for your nomination to newsdesk@westonmercury.co.uk

If possible, please include a photo of the nominee and

ensure they will be free to attend the awards at 10am on November 18. Nominations close on

October 12.
