The Carlton Walkers are taking part in the Mercury Mendip Challenge again this year

THE Weston Hospicecare Mercury Mendip Challenge is back for its 21st year.

Last year around 800 people took part in the challenge, raising over £50,000 for the hospice.

This year’s event, which is sponsored by the Mercury, will take place on June 5 and the hospice is expecting more people than ever before to get involved.

A hospice spokesman said: “It is a thoroughly enjoyable day and the aim this year is to raise even more money than ever before to help people in your area living with a life-limiting illness.”

The Mercury Mendip Challenge is suitable for everyone with its four distances, ranging from a five-mile fun walk to the ultimate challenge of the 30-miler.

Last year a group of 23 walkers from Weston undertook the enormous feat of walking the ten-mile route of the Mercury Mendip Challenge.

The Carlton Walkers, as they called themselves, have all experienced degrees of mental ill health and are made-up of a cross section of people from FRIEND, Mental Health Centre Resource Centre, and the Carlton Centre.

Both Centres aim to assist or find assistance for individuals who may have experienced a mental health related difficulty.

The walkers were already taking part in short walks to try and increase their level of physical activity but it became apparent that some of them wanted a bigger challenge.

Paul Davis, partnership manager of the Carlton Centre, said: “After a few weeks the group grew in confidence and walkers became less guarded, real friendships started to develop, a sense of camaraderie blossomed through the supporting of each other to complete the challenge and to do something positive for their own community and for such a good local cause.”

Overall the group raised an amazing £1,400 for Weston Hospicecare and will be taking part in the event again this year, with some new recruits.

There is still time to sign up to the Mercury Mendip Challenge on June 5, and the hospice is again offering people the option to add an extra mile to the top three routes.

Entry costs £7.50 for an adult and £5 for Under 16s. Register online at or call 01934 423960 for more information.
