PLANS are afoot to build luxury apartments and a 'stunning' high-quality hotel complete with a panoramic roof restaurant at the former Royal Pier Hotel.

PLANS are afoot to build luxury apartments and a 'stunning' high-quality hotel complete with a panoramic roof restaurant at the former Royal Pier Hotel.

The Mercury can exclusively reveal the proposals for the fire-ravaged hotel in Birnbeck Road, which will now be known as Birnbeck Peninsula.

The development is being proposed by site owner Wahid Samady and chairman of Surrey-based development company CNM Estates.

Wahid, who bought the hotel in 2007, said: "CNM's vision for the proposed building is for a stunning boutique hotel and apartment complex that will attract visitors from across the world.

"This multi-million pound investment will once again bring style and elegance to the northern shores of the town and complement the historic Prince Consort Gardens.

"It will be the first step in the regeneration of the Birnbeck area and will complement future schemes such as those proposed on and around the pier."

The promenade level is set to be revitalised with cafés and shops and possibly a lifeboat museum and a pool and spa complex.

There will be underground car parking levels and inside plans involve an atrium rising up through the building

Above the ground-floor level will be hotel rooms wrapped around the atrium with views across the water and the gardens. Above that there will be apartments suitable for families on holiday, as well as young couples or older people looking to retire.

The development is also set to have a rooftop restaurant, with panoramic views of the esplanade and out across the Bristol Channel to Cardiff Bay, which will be open to the public.

Wahid added: "This will be unlike any development in the region and will be of the highest quality, offering new and exciting facilities for visitors and residents of the town.

"The proposed new building is intended as a new landmark not just for Weston, but for the wider region."

Other features include a bar, a planted roof top terrace, child minding and laundry services and a facility to arrange leisure activities.

The building will be made of stone from the area and glass and stainless steel balconies will be fitted.

Wahid said the look of the development is intended to be a 21st Century interpretation of the nearby listed buildings of Wellington Terrace.

CNM Estates is intending to submit a planning application early in 2010 and two public exhibitions will be held in The Ashcombe Suite at the Winter Gardens.

The first will take place tomorrow (Fri) from 10am-6pm and the second on Saturday from 10am-2pm.

Wahid says the scheme will be adapted where possible to take on board comments from this exhibition and there will be further opportunity to comment when the application goes through its consultation period.

If approval is granted in the spring it is hoped that construction will commence in late 2010, so that the building can be completed in 2012.

A planning application for partial demolition of the hotel has already been submitted to North Somerset Council.
