A man has been charged by police after allegedly being involved in a hit-and-run crash in Burnham-on-Sea.

Richard Gowan Smart, of no fixed address, has been charged with a number of offences including aggravated vehicle taking; dangerous driving; driving while disqualified; failing to stop following a collision; failing to report a collision and using a motor vehicle without insurance.

The 50-year-old has also been charged with handling stolen goods and three counts of burglary.

Some of the charges relate to the fail to stop collision in Adam Street on Tuesday after a Volkswagen Passat collided with a Kia shortly after 3.30pm.

An elderly man driving the Kia was left trapped inside his car following the collision and was treated at the scene for minor injuries.

Police recovered the Passat on January 18 in Knowle, Bristol.

Smart was due to appear at Bristol Magistrates Court today (Monday).
