Midnight theft in North Somerset foiled by quick-thinking constable

PUBLISHED: 19:00 19 January 2017

A man has been arrested on suspicion of burglary after a special constable caught him with gardening equipment in Congresbury shortly before midnight.

The officer noticed a van parked across the gateway to a field on Friday and, given the late hour, he went to investigate.

The van’s driver ran away when approached, but he was quickly detained by the officer.

Items including a ride-on lawnmower, a tree shredder, a generator, a hedge trimmer and tree pruners were found both in and near the van, and officers later confirmed two separate garages had been broken into and the items recovered matched those which were taken.

The 34-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of two counts of burglary and was taken to Patchway custody centre in South Gloucestershire.

He has since been released on bail pending further enquiries.
