MORE than 100 keen walkers are already dusting off their boots to take to the Mendip Hills for the Weston Hospicecare Mercury Mendip Challenge.

The event, which will be held on June 10, is now in its 22nd year.

Fifty-year-old Karen Preece from Blagdon, has taken part in the challenge for more than 10 years, working her way up from five miles to brave the 30 mile expedition.

Karen takes to the hills with about 20 colleagues, friends and family - known as the Medical Moochers - to support the hospice.

Karen, a healthcare assistant at Wrington Vale Surgery, said: “Weston Hospicecare is a charity very close to my heart having had a dear friend die at the hospice several years ago. My friend was made to feel so comfortable and the staff are so friendly.

“We enjoy taking on the Mercury Mendip Challenge and we’ve had younger people join our group and sign up over the years.”

Weston Hospicecare is hoping to raise £50,000 this year which would be enough to provide the community palliative care nursing service for one month and the children’s bereavement service for five months; reaching out to more than 1,300 people in North Somerset and surrounding villages.

To take part in the challenge, you can register online at www.mendipchallenge.org.uk or by calling 01934 423960.
