THE region’s ambulance service has turned to a former boss of department store chain Debenhams for leadership and experience.

Peter Carr has been appointed new non-executive chairman of Great Western Ambulance Service (GWAS) after the departure of his predecessor, Tony FitzSimons.

Mr Carr, whose experience in the retailing industry is considerable, currently holds a number of non-executive appointments, including Royal United Hospital Bath NHS Trust and First Great Western Advisory Board.

Mr Carr, whose four-year term runs until March 2015, said: “I am pleased to be appointed as chairman of the Great Western Ambulance Service NHS Trust and look forward to the continued successful development of this vital service to the community.”

As chairman, Mr Carr will be paid £18,437 per year, in line with non-executive appointments to public sector bodies.

GWAS interim chief executive Martin Flaherty said: “Peter’s arrival is at a time of further major changes within the organisation, including the aim of becoming a foundation trust.

“I am sure that the leadership he will bring coupled with his considerable executive level experience across many organisations will be of huge benefit to the trust.”
