No delay for election count

VOTERS in Weston should know the result of their general election poll on the night of the election, while many people elsewhere may have to wait more than a day.

Figures from the Electoral Commission suggest one in three returning officers will postpone announcing their results until the day after the poll, blaming budget cuts and red tape.

But North Somerset Council says it does not plan a late declaration of results for the Weston and newly-formed North Somerset constituencies.

However its response to the commission's latest survey ahead of the poll, which must take place by June 4, was 'undecided'.

Weston's Conservative MP John Penrose will be defending a majority of 2,079 votes, while his political colleague Liam Fox has a 6,016 lead in the constituency currently known as Woodspring.
