Nominations pour in for new awards scheme showcasing Weston-super-Mare’s kind-hearted people

Nominations are coming in thick and fast for Community Champions of Weston-super-Mare, a new scheme which aims to celebrate the town’s unsung heroes.

People who have raised thousands for charity, organised community groups and helped people in their times of need have been nominated for the award.

One nominee is Sue Collard, whose daughter Mary died in 2011 at the age of 12 after suffering from bone cancer. The nomination for her says: “She has turned her life around and is busy raising funds for the Bone Cancer Research Trust, having raised more than £300,000 – she deserves recognition.”

Keith Price, who organises Weston’s Model Railway Exhibition, has also been nominated for an award for his charitable work and Triliria Newbury, who is the chairman of Weston’s Multicultural Friendship Association has been put forward for an award after years of bringing the community together.

The nomination for her says: “She brings together cultures and people from all around the world and helps communities live together better.

“She always ensures people are safe and also fed. Trilira is a worthy recipient for a community champion award and is one of our unsung heroes.”

Sayd Ahmed, who runs Pappadoms in Milton, has been put forward for an award for his work supplying free food to schools and community groups and providing vouchers to individuals who support good causes.

The nomination for him says: “He is a devoted community supporter and has done many, many, charitable things for the past 19 years.”
