Fracking campaigners believe drilling applications could be made in North Somerset this year

An anti-fracking group in North Somerset will launch a survey in areas it thinks are most at risk of being fracked ahead of possible drilling applications.

Petroleum exploration and development licences (PEDLs) have been granted along the Somerset coast, including in Weston and Burnham.

PEDLs allow a company to carry out exploratory work to see if fracking, which releases shale gas, is possible.

Wales-based company South Western Energy holds the licences but has suspended trading until April.

Frack Free North Somerset (FFNS) will carry out its survey this year, collecting signatures from people who do not consent to fracking in their area.

A spokesman said: “FFNS will use this expression of community feeling to bring pressure on North Somerset Council to refuse planning permission for drilling operations if applications are made later this year.”
