A council tax support service run by North Somerset Council has been nominated for an award.

North Somerset FirstSteps, which is led by Liberata – the authority’s council tax administrator – and Citizens Advice North Somerset, has been shortlisted for the Best Partnership Money Advice Award by the Institute of Money Advisers (IMA).

The partnership provides support and advice to people behind on council tax payments at its bases in Weston town centre and on the Bournville estate.

David Pasley, North Somerset Council’s executive member for finance, said: “By working in partnership, building community confidence and breaking barriers, people are now far more willing to engage with us to seek help to resolve their money issues.

“This initiative has resulted in people feeling more in control of their council tax debt.

“As a result, council tax collection has increased while the use of bailiffs has decreased.”
