The opening hours at Winscombe Library will increase in January.

A swipe-card entry system will be introduced at the library to allow registered users access at weekends and evenings when it would normally be closed.

The extended access programme is being rolled out at a number of North Somerset Council-run libraries, including Portishead.

The system will be introduced next year at Worle and Yatton too.

The library is open 16.5 hours a week at present and that will be increased ‘dramatically’, according to the council.

It says the exact hours will be confirmed in the new year but the library will be available seven days a week under the new system.

To install the entry system, the library will be shut on December 5, 7 and 19.
During the extended hours the library will be unstaffed but self-service machines will be available to users.
