Pellow, who appeared at Bristol Crown Court through video link from HMP Bristol on January 12, pleaded not guilty to the murder and will remain in custody until his trial on May 21.

A spokesman for Avon and Somerset police said a post-mortem examination confirmed Ms Thornton, aged 36, had died as a result of stab wounds.

Police were called to a house next to the Co-operative Food store, in Berrow Road, at about 7.30am on November 23, and a lane running beside the store was tapped off.

Efforts were made to revive Ms Thornton, but she died shortly after 8.15am.
