A twinning between Yatton and a French village could happen – but it will not be used as an excuse to give councillors a free trip to the continent.

Yatton Parish Council voted on Monday night to progress plans for a twinning with Pibrac.

The village, to the west of Toulouse, wishes to create a link between sports clubs and schools.

Cllr Jonathan Edwards said Pibrac first approached the council in 2015 but the idea went cold.

However, Cllr Christopher Jackson believes it is a ‘great idea’.

He added: “My only concern is we have to do this properly. It can’t have any hint of parish councillors going on jollies.

“If public funds were being used to visit the south of France then we’d put ourselves in a very awkward position.”

Cllr Edwards replied members would be expected to fund any visits, as they would their own holidays.
