FESTIVE fancy-dress clad runners braved the frosty conditions to take part in Weston’s annual Christmas Cracker race.

Sunday’s event began at the Grand Pier and more than 1,500 runners turned up to compete in the 23rd beach run which is organised by Weston Athletic Club.

Organiser Malcolm Gammon said: “The race went very well. It was a cold but sunny lovely day. It was a little frosty and icy to start but the sun soon cleared the promenade.”

After the race the club presented a cheque for £4,500 to Weston Hospicecare and it is thought a further £8,000 was raised from sponsored runners for other charities.

The winner was Matt Ellis from Bristol-based running club, the Westbury Harriers, and he did it in a course record time of 32 minutes and 29 seconds.
