POLICE and residents across Weston have joined forces to tackle speeding in their communities.

Hundreds of volunteers are working with police officers this week as part of a national speed awareness campaign.

Community Speed Watch (CSW) groups are staging checks throughout the area as part of the first co-ordinated effort across Avon and Somerset.

PC Dave Eastham from the Worle and villages neighbourhood team was conducting Speed Watch activity on Tuesday in Locking.

He said: “It is a great initiative and it is great that it is run by the community. The Speed Watch team does such a good job.

“Speeding is one of the main priorities put forward by communities again and again. More people are killed through road traffic accidents in the rural area than on motorways.

“Speed Watch is a preventative measure. If somebody is killed, people need to be aware of the impact on everyone.

“I think we need more people to step forward to get involved in Speed Watch, and all they need to do is call their local police. If there isn’t a team in your area, get in touch and we will help set one up.”

Teams work with the police to select dangerous problem areas. The team record the number of cars, take down the number plates of speeding vehicles and the police send warning letters to the culprits.

Speeding is one of the four main causes of serious injuries and deaths on the region’s roads.

Police and Crime Commissioner Sue Mountstevens said: “Police volunteers do a fantastic job in support of the work of the police and this operation helps to recognise their contribution.

“I would also encourage people to get involved in CSW schemes and to report any concerns they may have about speeding in their area to their local beat team.”

Volunteers are needed for Winscombe, Sandford, Locking and Speed Watch teams across the area. To speak to your local beat team call Avon and Somerset police on 101.
