THE Landmark Trust will be inviting the public to discover more about the hidden archaeology of Woodspring Priory in Kewstoke this month.

The building was founded in 1210 by William de Courtenay, grandson of Reginald FitzUrse - one of the murderers of Thomas Becket.

William de Courtenay gave his manors of Woodspring, Worle and Locking to the priory to provide it with an income.

Although this was not an unusual act in medieval times, it is something historians believe to have arisen out of guilt for his grandfather’s actions.

St Thomas was accordingly chosen as a patron saint of the priory and his martyrdom is depicted on its seal.

From May 18-19 visitors will discover recent work by local archaeology groups, enjoy displays, guided walks around the site and demonstrations of fieldwork surveys.

The open days provide a unique chance for the public to see inside and learn more abut the history and restoration of this important historic local landmark.

For more information contact the trust on 01628 825925.
