Raiders steal thousands of pounds

THOUSANDS of pounds in cash were stolen in overnight raids on two Cheddar businesses.

Police believe a gang of men are responsible for the break-ins at CRS Building Supplies and Cheddar Garden Centre last week.

The businesses are both located in Draycott Road and officers are hunting the same group of offenders for both burglaries.

The incidents happened overnight on December 8 and 9.

The thieves climbed over a fence, forced their way through a metal security fence and broke a window to get into CRS Building Supplies and took cash from the office.

Richard Liddle, company director, said this was the first time anything like this had happened on the premises.

The burglars also climbed a fence and broke through a metal sliding door to gain entry into the main shopping area of Cheddar Garden Centre before making off with money.

PC Kat Forrest, of Cheddar Police, said: “Both businesses are shocked and upset by these burglaries happening especially because it is so close to Christmas.

“The police are trying to do everything to support them and we are increasing patrols in the area.

“We would ask people to be vigilant and if they see anything that is even a little bit suspicious to report it to us.”

She said this type of crime is very rare in the village and the raids are the biggest the village has seen in recent months.

Anyone with information about the burglaries can ring police on 0845 456 7000.
