Rubbish races to hit Weston-super-Mare

Archant

People might be forgiven for thinking dozens of bin lorries gathered on Weston’s seafront is a rubbish addition to the scenic sea view – but spectators will be able to see exactly that when the National Refuse Championships come to town in June.

More than 160 bin lorry drivers and loaders will compete to win the coveted National Refuse Champions trophy at the event on June 10, which will take place from 10am-4pm.

The tournament will see 32 teams of five people filling large wheelie bins with stones and pushing them 50 metres to waiting refuse vehicles, where they will be emptied.

This tough process is then repeated as the trucks move forward in 50 metre stages until they reach the finish line.

The tournament, which was formerly known as the World Refuse Championships, has not been held since 1995.

However, the decision to revive the unusual tournament was taken so it could raise money for the Alzheimer’s Society.

Event organiser Spencer Law, who runs the Refuse Vehicle Solutions (RVS) company, said: “I remember the original event, which was such great fun and a superb way to raise money for a good cause.

“It’s important to recognise the hard work of these people who collect our rubbish and an opportunity for them to show how good they are.”

Laura Hewitt, a community fundraiser at the Alzheimer’s Society, thanked the tournament’s organisers for their support.

She said: “It’s fantastic that RVS have chosen to unite with us against dementia.

“We’re delighted to be chosen as their charity partner for the National Refuse Championships.”
