A NINE-YEAR-OLD schoolboy has raised more than £500 by organising a cake sale in memory of his grandmother.

Jack Millier drew up plans and got chatting to his neighbours in Thorndike Way, Burnham, arranging for them to make cakes and donate items.

While his mother, Rachel Mckenzie, thought Jack’s plans were not serious, the St Andrews School pupil was well on his way to setting up the event.

Rachel said: “At the time we thought he would forget about it in a few weeks. However, Jack has arranged his cake sale all by himself, and I have only helped with advertising it on facebook and local forums.

“I am very, very proud of what he has done.”

Jack delivered more than 80 leaflets to nearby houses and sent invitations to school friends before they broke up for summer.

Jack has already raised £550 from the event, which was held in his living room due to the bad weather, and the money will be donated to the oncology unit at Weston General Hospital, where his grandmother was treated.

Rachel said: “Jack is very passionate about this as my mum Lynda Walkling, Jack’s nan, who he was very close to sadly lost her long fight with cancer on February 15.

“My mum and dad raised lots of money for the oncology unit over the past two years which is why Jack wanted to do something himself.”

Jack also arranged cake raffles, cakes sales, a tombola and a table top sale and had written letters to local companies asking for donations as raffle prizes before the event. The schoolboy managed to secure a professional cake which will be made when required, two family tickets to Brean bird gardens, a meal for two with wine in The Rosewood, a £10 gift card from Asda and some bottles of wine from Lidl.
