SCOUTS from a new group are hoping to go camping in a tent bought by funds from a Mercury-supported campaign.
Go! Kids Go! has been launched by the Mercury and Weston Lions Club, and the 1st Shipham Scouts group is one of a score of entrants to apply for funding worth up to £1,000.
Go! Kids Go! will hand out three grants of £1,000 from leading businessmen and smaller grants starting at £200 from the Lions fund and the Weston Carnival Committee.
The Shipham scout group, which was formed in February, is bidding for a grant of £495 to buy a new tent to allow members to go on camp.
Group deputy leader Julie Leader said: “We have borrowed two tents to use before, but we would love to buy our own.
“Camping and adventure is what we want to introduce the scouts to, encouraging team work and learning skills such as cooking on a fire and first aid.
“Scouts also enjoy making camp gadgets by using pioneering skills with string and gadget wood.
“Being a new troop we do not currently have the resources for them to do this.”
