GOVERNMENT intervention is being sought in a last-ditch effort to stop hundreds of council jobs being lost in Weston.

GOVERNMENT intervention is being sought in a last-ditch effort to stop hundreds of council jobs being lost in Weston.

Communities and Local Government Secretary John Denham has been asked to halt North Somerset Council's purchase of new offices in Clevedon.

The call is being made by Weston Liberal Democrat prospective parliamentary candidate Mike Bell, who says the £15million 'vanity project' will cost the town dear.

Mr Bell said: "As taxpayers we will be paying the bill for these Tory debts for years to come and the damage in terms of lost jobs and regeneration momentum in our town will be grievous.

"I am determined to leave no stone unturned in an effort to stop this plan from going ahead.

"Whatever happens, the message must go loud and clear to the council yes-men that we will not forget their treachery."

He has also started a petition on the Downing Street website, which can be found at http://petitions.number10.gov.uk/keepwestonjobs/
