Weston-super-Mare Coastguard Rescue Team was forced to halt a charity fundraiser last night (Monday) to find a high-risk missing person.
Minutes before the Skate And Donate fundraiser was due to start at the pop-up ice rink at the Tropicana, coastguards were called to assist police with a search of the beach for a missing person.
Weston Lifeboat Crew was paged at 7.41pm, but was then stood down after the missing person was found on land by Weston coastguards.
A spokesman said: “Tonight, just as we were about to start our ice skating fundraising, we were called along with Clevedon Coastguard Rescue Team and Portishead Coastguard to assist the police with a high risk missing person.
“A number of search teams were deployed to search a large area of coastline, and within 45 minutes, the missing person was located by one of our teams.”
A spokesman for Portishead Coastguard added ‘fortunately there were a lot of coastguards in the right place at the right time’.
The crews were hosting a fundraiser for the Coastguard Association in memory of former team member Andy Matthews.
