Three Weston-super-Mare teenagers must raise more than £1,800 each to go on the experience of a lifetime.

Sixteen-year-olds Hannah Capes and Jodie and Lauren Filer have been selected to represent Somerset Cricket Club in Sri Lanka.

The girls must raise £1,865 each to cover the cost of their travels and living expenses.

The trip will see them travel to Kandy and Colombo, two cities in central Sri Lanka, for two weeks to play cricket against teams from across the country.

Hannah, who is a wicket keeper, told the Mercury this ‘fantastic opportunity’ could open a lot of doors for her cricket future, including the possibility of being scouted for England.

She added: “The trip is really important to me as it will give me more confidence as I will have to be responsible for myself while I am out in there.

“This opportunity will help me grow as an athlete and as a person.

“I will be able to mix with the local community, learn about their culture, language, food and how they live.”

The aspiring cricket star hopes to finish her time at college before joining the Armed Forces and joining their sports teams.

Hannah is not alone, as twin sisters Jodie and Lauren are also hoping to raise the money to get out to Sri Lanka in February next year.

The pair have represented Somerset for five years and are two of nine players who have been selected for the Emerging Players Performance squad.

Jodie is spin bowler who has won awards for being the leading wicket taker in her age group for the past three years.

Lauren has also seen success in bowling after she was invited to train with the England and Western Storm teams.

The sisters have already been hard at work fundraising for the trip and have hosted a quiz night at Weston Cricket Club, which was a great success, as well as organising a raffle at a softball tournament during the summer.

The trip will see the Somerset girls play in six different matches as well as exploring the towns and cities around them.

They will visit a Buddhist site and a tea factory to take in the country’s culture.
