AT a birthday age when most young girls would have their eyes on the latest chart-topping band, one Wedmore youngster has displayed an altogether more selfless side.

When Sophie Spurrell turned 11, she enjoyed a charity bash to raise money for three charities; the Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance, CLIC Sargeant and Arthritis UK.

With help from friends and local businesses, the Hugh Sexey Middle School pupil raised £514, and this week presented £200 of the money to the air ambulance.

In return, Sophie was given a tour of the airfield base at Henstridge, as well as being given the chance to meet crew members and get a close-up look at the helicopter.
