Speed cameras to be switched off

ALL fixed speed cameras in Somerset could be switched off by April after the council rejected an application from police to take over the running costs.
Somerset County Council was approached following a police decision to disband the Safecam partnership and asked to take on the job of running the county’s 14 cameras.
But with the authority facing huge cash cuts across all its departments, it has says it cannot afford the £60,000-a-year running costs.
Council cabinet member Daid Hall said: “We understand their position, but in the current challenging financial climate we are unable to take on the considerable costs of running the cameras ourselves, particularly as we believe that many of them are nearing the end of their operational life and would shortly be due for upgrading.”
