A DEDICATED charity hiker from Mark is once again taking to Britain’s roads in memory of his niece.

Steve Fear’s 16-year-old niece Sophie Deacon died in 1993 from meningitis, and the 57-year-old has walked almost 8,500 miles since in aid of Meningitis UK, raising more than £1million in the process.

Starting on Saturday, his next venture will be the charity’s Bordering on a Vaccine walk around Northern Ireland’s coastline, which will cover 201 miles over nine days.

Ahead of the walk, which aims to raise £50,000 for the charity, the Dutch Road resident said: “Every walk is a challenge. The walk I did last autumn was 16 days so this one should be more manageable.

“I always put Sophie’s photo in the windscreen of the van which accompanies us to remind me why I keep walking – to help find a vaccine to beat this terrible disease.”
