A NEW live music event could be on its way to Weston after Channel 4 bosses announced the end of its hit T4 programme.

The popular weekend music show has been packing the beach with fans eager to get a glimpse of stars such as Tulisa, Rita Ora and Rizzle Kicks for the past eight years.

T4 On The Beach is broadcast live from the sands in Weston every summer, drawing tens of thousands of music fans to the town from all over the country.

Channel 4 this week told the Mercury it is ‘looking into’ options to broadcast a fresh new event next year after bosses announced the T4 show will finish in December.

The broadcaster said T4, shown on Saturdays and Sundays, no longer delivered the ‘cut through’ to youngsters it once did, with sister channel E4 now reaching the largest section of the 16 to 34-year-old audience.

The show has helped launch the careers of several presenters including X Factor host Dermot O’Leary and current Radio 1 breakfast DJ Nick Grimshaw.

The change means Weston could be in for a rebranded, re-launched music show next year without the T4 name.

Spokesman for Channel 4 James Macleod said: “While the brand of T4 will come to an end in December we are looking at options to continue with similar broadcast events for next year.”

North Somerset Council’s executive member for tourism, Felicity Baker, said she believes a music event in some guise will return.

She said: “I am fairly confident they are coming back. We understand how important it is to Weston and obviously we will be helping them like we normally do.”
