Part of the M5 has been closed this afternoon (Friday) due to a ‘police incident’.

The motorway has been closed southbound between junction 22 (Burnham-on-Sea) and junction 23 (Bridgwater).

Traffic is already building between Weston-super-Mare and Burnham.

No details have been released about the incident yet, but all three lanes were closed for a short time.

As of 3pm, one of the lanes has been re-opened, but delays of around 30 minutes are expected.

A Highways England spokesman said: “Please seek an alternative route this afternoon and diversion details will be published shortly.”

The incident is not expected to clear until after 4pm.
