A WESTON man has received a top RAF honour after ‘consistently achieving over and above the call of duty’.

Flight Sergeant Martin Burnell, who is currently based at RAF Halton in Buckinghamshire, is a parachute instructor and was given a Meritorious Service Medal in recognition of his unstinting excellence.

Martin, who is a former pupil at Bournville and Wyvern schools and Weston College who enlisted in the RAF in 1981, received his award from the Duke of Kent.

After the ceremony, which was attended by Martin’s wife Susan and son Joshua, Martin said: “After over 30 years of service I have been lucky to have been involved with so many different, exciting, challenging and diversified jobs throughout my career.

“It was an honour to receive such a prestigious award from the Duke of Kent.”
