PORTISHEAD town councillors have paid tribute to the town clerk who retires from his post next week.

Martin Dolton took up the position in 2009 and has seen the council through difficult times including national government changes, the introduction of the Localism Act and severe budget cuts at North Somerset Council.

Speaking at the June town council meeting, councillors described him as ‘their rock’ and ‘an asset to the town’.

Former police officer Martin has worked tirelessly on behalf of the council and members say, with his knowledge, intelligence and wisdom, he will be a hard act to follow.

Martin will be succeeded by Joanne Duffy who is currently clerk to Congresbury Parish Council and will take up the position in September. Meanwhile the town council will be supported by deputy clerk Rachel Tranter and two administrators.

In the short term, Martin will remain in a consultancy role and will be available to the council when needed.
