The £34million project, which has included new sea defences, promenade improvements and Princess Royal Square has won the Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI) South West award.

The works, which were completed by North Somerset Council earlier this year, were up against 20 other submissions from around the South West, including the Gloucester docks and Bath’s Southgate development.

The RTPI is one of the country’s leading planning bodies, and the award comes following a recent visit to Weston by the organisation’s president Richard Summers.

The award chairman, Jean Marshall, said: “The judges were very impressed with the submission and resolved that it should be the award winner in the Schemes on the Ground category. Moreover, the judging panel decided that it should be the overall winner of the RTPI South West Planning Achievement Awards 2011.”

The council’s deputy leader and executive member for planning, Cllr Elfan Ap Rees, said: “We get lots of positive comments from residents and visitors and to have this backed up by continuing industry recognition is a real testament to the hard work of all involved in the design, development and implementation of the project and the excellent working relationships built up by our officers with the contractors. It also is excellent publicity for the town.”
