POLICE have renewed their appeal for witnesses after two men were seriously assaulted yesterday evening (Friday) in Weston town centre - with one left in a ‘critical’ condition.
Police were called to the Saffron House area of Prospect Place at around 8pm after the men were reported hurt, and the road was closed to allow forensics officers to carry out a thorough investigation.
The two men - whose details have not been released - were taken to Weston General Hospital with ‘serious injuries’. One was transferred to Southmead Hospital in Bristol in the early hours of this morning (Saturday), where he is said to be in a ‘critical condition’.
However, officers are now looking to track down a group of men who are suspected to have carried out the assaults. They fled the scene on pushbikes.
An Avon and Somerset Constabulary spokesman told the Mercury: “We were called to an assault on two men just after 8pm yesterday evening (Friday).
“One of the victims suffered life-threatening injuries and is currently in a critical condition in Southmead Hospital, Bristol.
“The second victim suffered less serious injuries and has received medical treatment at hospital.
“There will be an increased police presence in the area as this investigation is progressed and we would like to thank the local community for their cooperation.
“We are appealing for anyone who was in the locality of Prospect Place last night (Friday) between 7.30-8.30pm to contact us as a matter of urgency.
“Anyone with information should call us now on 101 and quote log reference number 1048 of 17/7.”
* UPDATE: Three men have been arrested in connection with this incident.
