A BRITISH institution is set to be renovated and turned into a community asset once more.

Yatton’s red telephone box has been derelict for years after the phone was removed from it.

But it is set to be given a new lease of life after villager Martin Gray came up with a plan to turn it into a community book store.

Bookworms will be able to drop off books they have finished and pick up new ones that take their fancy.

The phone box is the last remaining one in Yatton and belongs to the Through The Looking Glass hairdressers opposite.

Martin’s home overlooks the red box and he said the firm and his neighbours backed his plans.

He thinks it will cost about £100 to put in shelves and make the phone box secure and is appealing for volunteers to help him through the website.

Martin said: “If people have time to help out at the weekend with painting and putting shelves up then that would be fabulous.

“I think the biggest challenge is to keep people using it. I will be a bit fed up if it isn’t used or kids come in and trash it.

“But I want it to be the community’s, not mine, although I’m happy to manage it.”
