Weston based photographer - Derek Hitchins - shares some of his favourite photographs with the Mercury.
“I started out back in the days of black and white, ISO100 film and 24 shots to the reel. Landscapes were my first love, although living by the seaside at Weston today presents exhilaratingly beautiful sunsets, seascapes, and crowds of people happily enjoying themselves… most of which emerge better in colour. So, now it’s digital SLRs, interchangeable lenses and, occasionally the iPhone – which can give surprisingly good results. But occasionally, I revert to my first love…
“I often venture out along the Esplanade, which is now so splendid it should surely be called the ‘Weston Corniche,’ with a small camera (Panasonic DMC-LX100) on the lookout for something picture-worthy. Interesting pictures seem to occur in the most unlikely situations! Beauty, as they say, is in the eye of the beholder.
“Still, picture composition is important. A good picture really tells a story, therefor a mix of photographic subjects helps, whereby the story can be seen – or suspected – in the picture. Oh, and I love taking pictures into the Sun!
“Every photographer will tell you that the best time to take pictures is in the so-called Golden Hours, i.e. around dawn and dusk. And they’d be right; the early sunlight coming from the side and casting long shadows can be magical. If, like me, you are not always up with the lark, it is sometimes possible with post-processing to create similar effects, sometimes! The gentle application of post-processing opens up a whole new range of possibilities for turning a dull photo into an artistic masterpiece. Or, so I have been told…”
